In tribute to “Deaf Awareness Month” in Los Angeles, Councilman Tony Cardenas honored18-year-old Red Bull athlete Ashley Fiolek, who clinched the Gold Medal in the 2009 X Games Women’s Moto-X, as well as the 2008 and 2009 AMA Women’s Motocross Championship. Ashley, born profoundly deaf, recently secured the 2009 AMA Women’s Motocross Championship earlier this month, despite crashing and enduring a broken collarbone.
Last Friday in L.A., Cardenas held a press conference in the City Hall rotunda alongside Ashley and her Honda/Red Bull Racing CRF250R to honor her achievements, as well as the accomplishments of other role models in the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. A video montage of Ashley’s courageous riding was displayed on a screen, and following the press conference, each council office joined Cardenas in recognizing extraordinary deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in their respective districts during the City Council meeting. In 2003, Cardenas designated September as “Deaf Awareness Month” in Los Angeles. Congrats, Ashley!
