New York, NY – February 10, 2010 –The Red Bull Butter Cup series pressed on this past weekend with two different stops. Both Appalachian Ski Mountain, NC and Perfect North, IN were host to the unique butter pads and dolloped out huge prizes to competitors that traveled from far and wide to compete and showcase their bag of tricks.
As the only series stop in the Southeast, Appalachian Ski Mountain was host to Saturday’s event where the competitors disregarded the harsh weather and nearly closed roads to attend. Competitors brought the heat for a chance at the hottest prizes of the series so far. This stop not only featured a men’s division, but added a women’s division for the first time in series history as well. In the men’s division, Kris Jones and Austin Leonard battled it out for 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Jones narrowly beat out Leonard for that 2nd place spot earning a trip to Charlotte,NC to watch the NASCAR Sprint Cup race from the Red Bull Energy Station. In the end though, Andrew Sanchez ran consistent trick sequences together effortlessly to slide into a 1st place finish. Sanchez will keep his skills dialed with his first place prize sending him on an all-expense paid trip to the Red Bull Butter Cup series stop at Sierra at Tahoe.
On Sunday, the Red Bull Butter Cup series made its way to Lawrenceburg, IN and Perfect North Slopes. This was the resort’s biggest weekend of the year, with their legendary Big Air contest overlooking the base of “Tuff Enuff”, over 600 spectators peeped the technical trickery thrown down to the tunes of DJ Clock Work.
The competitors were a strong mix of 50 athletes from Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and even one from New York. Home turf was a big advantage with the top three finishers all being Indiana riders. Greame Burress came in third place with Reid Shelton sliding just above him in 2nd. However it was Craig “Shredwards” Edwards front boardsliding the entire table after hopping up from the flats sans snow kicker that secured his first place finish. No stranger to the podium, Edwards was the third place finisher at the Cincinnati Red Bull Manny Mania stop in 2008 showing his skateboard manual skills. Judge Bently Hamilton was a fan of this stop, “I was definitely impressed with the turnout and the vibe, all of the kids were really positive. That kind of vibe helps with progression and it takes the sport to the next level!”
Thanks to Appalachian Ski Mountain, Perfect North, Forum, Oakley, Foursquare, Nike 6.0 and Special Blend for another great event. The next Red Bull Butter Cup stop takes place February 14thth at Brandywine, OH followed by a stop at Chestnut Mountain Resort, IL on February 20th. The Red Bull Butter Cup contest series started on the East Coast but has now expanded throughout the U.S. in only its second year. Red Bull Butter Cup is all about how much style snowboarders can spread onto the custom-made features also known as "butter pads." Riders jib, bonk, tap and slide across the pads, making sure to lay it on thick with a lot of smooth buttering. Regional athletes battle it out in jam format sessions, carving and spreading the snow like butter for cash and prizes. Overall style and creativity will help the cream rise to the top, so be ready to spread it on in this purely pasteurized competition!
