Colombian golf star Camilo Villegas triumphed 5 & 4 over Sergio Garcia in the consolation match to take third place overall in the WGC Accenture Match Play Championships yesterday.

For the second day in a row, Villegas had to set his alarm clock for 4:30am to be ready for his early-morning tee-time at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Arizona, but he was anything but bleary-eyed as he putted from 23 feet to finish just short of the cup to halve the 14th hole, at which point Spaniard Garcia conceded.

“It’s good – I’m excited for the year,” said the 28-year-old afterwards. “I’ve got to continue having this attitude and keep having fun.”

Meanwhile, Camilo's British Red Bull teammate Oliver Wilson had made it to the quarterfinals, only losing to Garcia 4 & 3, having beaten Luke Donald in the previous match – though he needed an extra hole after his fellow Englishman knocked in a stunning 50-foot putt to level their match, something Wilson initially found a little hard to believe.

“I was a bit speechless,” Wilson admitted. “What can you do? It's great golf. That's what we play for and things like that make it really exciting.”

The pair even managed to share a laugh as they walked to the next tee for the extra-hole playoff, chuckling at Donald’s outrageous fortune.

“He was saying it was very rude of him to do that,” Wilson commented, “and I agreed.”

Paul Casey had ended Villegas’s final hopes, but he himself lost 4 & 2 to Ian Poulter in the final.
