For the second time in a row Toronto hosted the Canadian Red Bull King of the Rock Final on Saturday, July 7. Host and Much Music VJ T-RexXx welcomed 46 of Toronto's top ballers who had made their way to Sherbourne Common to battle it out for a chance to head to Alcatraz in September and compete for the title Red Bull King of the Rock.
Competition was high for returning 2011 Canadian champion Aaron Duncan trying to defend his title. After almost 3 hours of playing time and 5 intense rounds of 1-on-1 basketball , the competition was narrowed down to 3 players that had to leave it all on the court in a round-robin finish to determine the champion: Kevin Messiah, Liam McMorrow and above mentioned champ Aaron Duncan. Initially the odds were against Aaron losing the coin toss and therefore having to play back to back in the finals, but in the first game of the series, he defeated Kevin Messiah 6-2 to take the lead. In game 2, Aaron faced Liam McMorrow standing a towering 7'11", which would prove to be the toughest match-up of the day.
With the round-robin in play, all Aaron had to do was beat Liam to take the title, and avoid forcing the series into a third game between Liam and Kevin. Emotions were running high, but it was Aaron who edged out the win over Liam at a score of 10-7 to make him this year's returning champion of the Red Bull King of the Rock Toronto Qualifier. The win secured him a ticket to Alcatraz on September 22 to compete against the world's best ballers, a $500 price purse and a sweet goodie pack from Skullcandy. Aaron made his mark at last year´s main event in San Francisco, being the only international qualifier to make it to the Top 8 - so we can only expect big things from the Toronto-native again this year.
