Jordy Smith is the number one surfer in the world after riding to victory in front of his home crowd in the Five Star Mr. Price Pro in South Africa.
Smith sits atop the ASP Men's World Rankings ahead of this week’s Billabong Pro after a dominant display of surfing in Ballito.
“It’s great to be at number one but it’s a long road ahead,” Smith said. “I look at it like boxing – there are 12 rounds and we’ve only been through four, so there’s plenty more to go and you have to hang tight.”
Smith became only the third South African winner of the Mr. Price Pro when he posted scores of 7.50 and 7.93 (out of 10) on the glassy three-foot right handers of Ballito near Durban to beat countryman Casey Grant in the final.
Amazingly it was Smith’s first home victory since winning the ISA World Junior Games in Durban seven years ago.
"I haven’t won an event in front of my home crowd since I was 15,” Smith revealed. “This is just wild! I am so happy right now I don’t even know what to say!”
Jordy's now headed to the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay; the event window opens on July 15th.
