Red Bull's Slovenian shredder Marko Grilc has knocked Sebastien Toutant off the top of the TTR world rankings after winning the 6Star Billabong Air & Style 2009 / II in Innsbruck, Austria.
Grilc, who had not been on the original invite list, only got his chance to come up against some familiar Air & Style faces at the Bergisel Stadium after injuries plagued two riders in practice. He certainly made the most of his opportunity, throwing down a switch backside double corked 1080 in the super finals to take the crown.
'This is the best day of my life by far.' - Marko Grilc
And, with Toutant not competing in Innsbruck, Grilc is on top of the world after also leapfrogging the Canadian in the overall standings.
“This is the best day of my life by far," said Grilc. "I never even thought that this could happen. I am just very stoked. I went to Australia and New Zealand and then today I am number one. I don't even know what to say. It came out of fun and pleasure and now I am here; I am stoked.”
Reigning Swatch TTR world champion Peetu Piiroinen of Finland, who was up against Grilc in the final round, secured second place by stomping a backside double corked 1080 – he has also moved up to fourth in the world rankings. Norway’s Andreas Wiig rounded out the podium in third place after laying down a clean fronside 1080 double flip in the final.
The next event on the TTR tour as the race for the world title heats up is the 6Star Oakley Arctic Challenge in Oslo, Norway (Dec 30 – Jan 3).
