Jordy Smith is safely through to the third round of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach in Victoria, Australia after beating Brazilian Marco Polo in round two.
The event was moved by organizers to the nearby Thirteenth Beach this morning, and Jordy took full advantage of the increased swell on offer. The South African scored 12.23 to comfortably win his heat and move into the next round.
He will be joined in round three by Red Bull teammates Adriano de Souza, Michel Bourez and Mick Fanning. Current ASP World Tour champion Fanning will face Gabriel Medina in the third round, after the 16-year-old Australian pulled off the shock of the day when he beat former world champion C.J. Hobgood.
Medina is clearly on a roll after beating Kolohe Andino to the Rip Curl International Gromsearch title over the weekend. The Gromsearch is a worldwide series of events for junior surfers and has been won in the past by future greats such as Smith and Sally Fitzgibbons.
Andino was highly favored going in to the Final after scoring a massive 17.40 in his first-round heat. However, a score of 12.70 in the Final was only good enough for third, as Medina won with a score of 16.57.
The surfers should be back in the water tomorrow morning, as de Souza takes on tour rookie Brett Simpson and Bourez meets Tom Whitaker in the third round.
