In eight days’ time, Travis Pastrana will ring in the New Year with his attempt to jump a rally car further than it’s ever gone before as Red Bull: New Year. No Limits. arrives in Long Beach, California. To count us down to the main event, we look at some of his greatest moments so far.

Number 8: The Grand Canyon BASE Jump

“199 lives? I just used up a couple,” says Travis in this amazing moment from the archives of the Nitro Circus. In 2007 they decided to turn a U.S. National Park into an extreme sports playground.

FMX is dangerous. BASE jumping is incredibly dangerous. So why not combine the two? Instead of simply jumping, the Circus crew ride motocross bikes off ramps and then backflip into the canyon.

For his first run, Pastrana was joined by Canadian MX champion Jolene Van Vugt. The jump went off without a hitch as the two cleared the canyon face, opened their chutes and dropped to safety.

On the second run, Travis ran into trouble, delaying opening his chute for a fraction of a second and then landing hard on a rocky ledge, rolling over a cactus patch and coming to a rest near an almots 100-foot drop.

He escaped with minor injuries – a walking pin cushion thanks to the attention of the cacti – but walking and able to tell the tale to extreme sports fans everywhere.
