Travis Pastrana trains ahead of NYNL 2009 Garth Milan / Red Bull Photofiles

There are just nine days to go until Travis Pastrana attempts to break the world record for jumping a rally car at Red Bull: New Year. No Limits. in Long Beach, California. To count us down to the main event, we're highlighting 10 of his greatest moments.

Number 9: The X-Games Barspin

The 26-year-old has been a star draw at the X Games for more than a decade. His story begins in 1999 when organizers added an FMX competition to entice the young star to the event. Travis obliged and duly became the first person to win FMX at the Games – doing so with an unprecedented score of 99.00.

Over the years, he has followed that victory with multiple golds, but here’s a silver to remember. In 2005, one year before Travis did THAT double backflip, he arrived in L.A. having prepared a new trick to stun the crowds: the first ever Backflip Barspin on a motorbike.

Having spent many hours carefully setting up the bike for the stunt, Travis went for it, only for the bike to break on take-off. As he tried the barspin, the bike was disintegrating and, as he landed, the bike was in two tidy pieces.

But you can’t keep a good man down. Pastrana hammed it up for the crowd, lapped up the laughter and then got another bike to perform a Candybar Backflip to No Hand Lander to take a silver medal.
