The countdown to Red Bull: New Year. No Limits. concludes. Remember to tune in to ESPN tonight to watch Travis Pastrana attempt to pull off one of the most amazing stunts of all time as he rings in the new decade. Speaking of amazing stunts...
Number 1: The X-Games Double Backflip
Becoming an international star is not just about having the skills and talent of an elite athlete, it’s also about being able to perform when the pressure is on. That’s exactly what Pastrana did when he pulled off the first double backflip at the X Games.
The trick was rewarded with a score of 98.60, the highest in the event's history, and completed a hat-trick of medals at one X Games – a feat only previously accomplished by two other athletes.
But there was much more to it than that. Although he’d already landed the trick as a Nitro Circus stunt in 2005, this was a first for competition and with the world watching on ESPN. This was the moment when Travis Pastrana, Supercross rider/FMX rider/rally driver, went stellar.
Pastrana may have done more spectacular feats since, and won greater prizes, but he became synonymous with this trick. Tonight, in Long Beach, California, he could eclipse it.
