On the heels of signing French legend Thierry Henry, the New York Red Bulls have acquired Mexican National Team superstar Rafael Marquez, the most accomplished Mexican player of the last decade.
The 31-year old star, who most recently played for Barcelona, will be officially announced as a new member of the team at a press conference at Red Bull Arena August 3 at 10:15 am PT/1:15 pm ET. It will be streamed live on www.newyorkredbulls.com.
I am committed to doing my very best to help the Red Bulls in their playoff push this year and compete for championships in the years to come.
Marquez, who has captained the Mexican National Team in the last three World Cups, comes to the Red Bulls with an avid and passionate Mexican fan base both in the US and in Mexico.
Marquez had this to say: "Coming to New York and playing in Major League Soccer was a chance that I could not refuse. I am committed to doing my very best to help the Red Bulls in their playoff push this year and compete for championships in the years to come.”
Marquez will play his first home game at Red Bull Arena on August 14 versus the Los Angeles Galaxy. The New York Red Bulls also come to play the Galaxy on September 24 at the Home Depot Center, as a capacity crowd is expected to watch both Henry and Marquez play in their first game in L.A.
