New Brunswick has long been known as “Hub City” for it’s central location to Jersey rivers, roads and rails. That moniker is still relevant in describing the music scene, as members of bands from all over the tri-state area gravitate here.
Gates has five members from all over the country now living around New Jersey and New York, but agreeing that they call New Brunswick home.
Formed after the break-up of Bears & Bright Lights, Gates is an inventive ambient rock band that fully embraces the DIY philosophy, taking pride in the fact that they control every aspect of their output from album art to designs, photos, videos and promo.
Mike Maroney and Dan Crapazano handle bass and drum duties respectively while Ethan Koozer, Dan King and Kevin Dye combine guitar to lend that very unique sound with Dye on vocals.
Influenced by such outfits as Minus the Bear, Explosions in the Sky and American Football, Gates recorded and mixed “The Sun Will Rise and Lead Me Home” themselves to release in early 2011, and then repeated that work ethic in 2012 on “You Are All You Have Left To Fear” in 2012.
With two US tour and a trip to the UK under their belts, Gates are creatively exploring new sounds, while maintaining the traditional approach of the underground, and staying extremely passionate about everything they do.
“We're five guys from different backgrounds just creating something new to resonate with people,” says Maroney.
