Travis Pastrana’s next racing challenge begins in earnest this weekend as he makes his stock-car racing debut in NASCAR’s K&N Pro Series’ Toyota All-Star Showdown.
The January 29 tune-up at California’s Irwindale Speedway will help the X-Games star, multiple supercross and motocross champion, and four-time Rally America title holder to prepare for his NASCAR Nationwide Series debut at the Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis in late July.
Travis Pastrana Excited
“I’m really excited to see what we can do in the Nationwide Series,” says Pastrana who is a part owner of the Pastrana-Waltrip Racing where he’ll drive. “We are definitely going to make a mark when we come in there and hopefully we won’t get banged up too bad too many times. No 360s, no backflips and we should be alright.”
It will be a busy first Nationwide weekend in July for Pastrana, who will also compete in the X-Games in Los Angeles and will fly between California and Indiana to run in both. He plans to use the X-Games to promote his NASCAR debut.
'Where is the best competition in the U.S.? That’s NASCAR'
Last week, Pastrana also unveiled his new NASCAR ride which will sport the No. 99, although he’s added a ghosted No. 1 to reflect the No. 199 he’s always driven under.
His Indianapolis debut will be the first stop in a seven-race Nationwide schedule in 2011, which will see him also take to the track at Richmond, Dover, Kansas, Texas, Phoenix and the season finale in Homestead-Miami. After getting his feet wet this year, he plans to enter at least 20 Nationwide races in 2012.
To prepare for the California event, Pastrana completed a test with the team last month at Florida’s New Smyrna Speedway in a K&N Pro East Series car. Now he can’t wait to get his NASCAR career started at the weekend.
“We’ve tested, but nothing compares to racing and I’m really looking forward to that!” he says. “Where is the best competition and the best drivers in the US? That’s NASCAR and to be able to get an opportunity to go race against those guys and see what they’re made of is a dream come true.”
