Boreal Mountain, CA – March 23, 2010 – Kicking off a round of West Coast stops, the Red Bull Butter Cup series made its way to NorCal this past weekend where Boreal Mountain hosted the event, right in front of the base lodge. The West Coast stops play by a few different rules however, as each rider accumulates points at each stop, then at the culmination of the three-part series, the rider with the most points is crowned the West Coast Red Bull Butter Cup champion. With events held at Northstar-at-Tahoe and Sierra-at-Tahoe in the coming weeks, it was important for riders to have a strong start to the series competition.
Throwing another twist into the event was the introduction of “reality TV” style elimination for the finals, eliminating one rider every five minutes until there was only one champion left sliding. In the Women’s division, Danyale Patterson won top honors followed by Linsey Ashdown and Katie Britt as 2nd and 3rd place finishers, respectively. Under the twilight of dusk, the Ams took to the course with Tanner Salsman finishing in 1st place. Max Gaal came in 2nd with John Weatherly trailing close in 3rd. When it came time for the Pro division, the lights came up and the stage was set for some serious night riding. Nial Romanek would come in 3rd place right behind Mark Wilson who finished 2nd . However, it was Dakota Whitaker’s line that included a nose press across the ice ledge and 360 spin onto the down tube that would put him in 1st place and the lucky recipient of 100 points to kick off the West Coast series.
While the competition was varied, from the Kush brothers at ages 3 and 7 all the way up to the experienced pros, the one consistent comment was that the creativity of the custom-made butter pads inspired the athletes. Rider Max Alonso said, “This event is one of the most fun I’ve ever done. You just get creative and have a good time, all my friends are here too!” Rider Katie Britt agreed remarking, “Setup was pretty buttery, everything was setup so you could throw your best tricks on it!”
Thanks to Oakley and Ride Snowboarders for another great event. Next up, series stops take place at Northstar-at-Tahoe, CA on March 26th, Summit Board Shop, MN on March 27th, Winter Park, CO on April 3rd, Brighton, UT on April 9th and finishing up the trio of West Coast stops is Sierra-at-Tahoe, CA on April 10th. The Red Bull Butter Cup contest series started on the East Coast but has now expanded throughout the U.S. in only its second year. Red Bull Butter Cup is all about how much style snowboarders can spread onto the custom-made features also known as "butter pads." Riders jib, bonk, tap and slide across the pads, making sure to lay it on thick with a lot of smooth buttering. Regional athletes battle it out in jam format sessions, carving and spreading the snow like butter for cash and prizes. Overall style and creativity will help the cream rise to the top, so be ready to spread it on in this purely pasteurized competition!
