Student Teams from Chico State University and University of Nevada, Reno Dominate Alpine Meadows Ski Resort for Wild Sledding Competition
On Saturday, March 13, students from some of Northern California’s best known universities showed off their creativity, ingenuity and stellar team spirit at the Red Bull Schlittentag event. Red Bull Schlittentag, German for “sledding day,” allowed students to debut unique homemade sleds and race them down the slopes of Alpine Meadows Ski Resort. Sixteen student teams raced their crafts in front of spectators and judges in hopes of capturing first place. Criteria for judging included artistic merit, innovation, team spirit and speed. Judges for the event included Jamaican Ski Team member and Alpine Meadows ambassador, Errol Kerr as well as TV’s “Deadliest Catch” star and Tahoe local, Monte Colburn.
Team “Freebird” from Chico State University started the day as an instant favorite due to their Americana theme and later wowed the crowd with a gnarly crash, which sent three pilots head-over-feet down the hill. The University of Nevada, Reno’s team “Schlitten Frat” stole the spotlight when they became the early leader in the race. “Crash Cabs” of Chico State University soon trumped team “Schlitten Frat” by winning over the judges with their creativity and scoring major points as the fastest craft of the day at 13.23 seconds, sending “Shlitten Frat” into second place. “Trucker Deluxe” of Chico State University came in behind “Schlitten Frat” at a cool third, scoring high in marks for both creativity and speed of their Jamaican bobsled-themed sled.
