The first annual Ronnie Renner Freeride Tour will see FMX riders swap stadiums for sand dunes in the California desert.
X Games gold medalist and Guinness World Record holder Renner and his intrepid band of Red Bull athletes and friends will be heading to some of the top off-road riding spots in California.
Here's where and when the action will be taking place: Ocotillo Wells, March 26-28; Glamis, April 9-11; and Pismo Beach, May 28-31.
In the meantime, we wanted to find out a bit more about what's in store, so we asked the man himself a few questions…
Who have you invited to join you on the tour?
A lot of the Great Ride Open crew, as well as guys that I really like to ride with. Drake McElroy, Tommy Clowers, Jeff Tilton, Myles Richmond and FreerideMX.com’s Steve Haughelstine...
Can you describe the landscape you’re taking on?
Ocotillo is a very unique place, it has every terrain feature you can imagine. Its like the moon! Glamis is all sand dunes and the same with Pismo, except its directly on the beach, so that will be really unique.
After riding man-made ramps in arenas, is it good to get back to nature?
Oh God, yes! I get so bored of ramps that I almost hate them! This is where my passion for riding shines through!
Last year, you and the X Fighters rode out to Glamis. What were your personal highlights?
It was cool to see such a huge group of Red Bull riders together. All of them putting their trust in me to find the jumps was really cool. It was cool to see Rebeaud and Maddo so motivated to ride out there.
How do you set up the bikes for the desert? And how do you keep them going in those conditions?
I don’t do much different to my bikes for the desert, unless I’m in the dunes. Then I put on a paddle tire.
FMX riders are not known for being cautious but do you have to take any special measures to cope with the heat?
Yes, I don’t go there in the summer!
What’s your proudest moment (so far)?
Probably winning the X Games Step-Up event in 2007. Or maybe the Red Bull Experiment in Santa Monica, California in 2008.
