Sally Fitzgibbons continues her impressive run on the 2010 ASP Women’s World Tour, making yet another Final to take her third consecutive runner-up finish at the Movistar Peru Classic today.
Fitzgibbons was strong in every round, eventually falling to Brazil’s Silvana Lima in the Final. "I knew I needed to put up high scores early on because Sally had been surfing so well all event,” said Lima.
"Another bridesmaid," Fitzgibbons sighed. "It's a good result all the same and great for my rating, but I want to win one really bad. Silvana was ripping though. I couldn't really get into a good rhythm in that heat. I felt good all day, but she got the jump on me and I was never able to answer back. It's all good though. We've had amazing support here in Peru and I'm looking forward to the next one."
Sofia Mulanovich (pictured at left), former ASP Women's World Champion (2004) and 2009 Movistar Peru Classic winner, once again pulled out some late-heat heroics to best Chelsea Hedges in the Quarterfinals but was unable to overcome a rampaging Fitzgibbons in the Semifinals.
"It's disappointing for sure," Mulanovich said. "Sally was surfing really well and I couldn’t get the waves I needed. It's another strong result, but I would have liked to have made the Final."
Stephanie Gilmore, reigning ASP Women's World Champion and current ASP Women's World No. 1, suffered a last-minute defeat at the hands of Lima in their Semifinal bout.
Fitzgibbons maintains a strong second place in the ASP standings, with Mulanovich currently in fourth.
The next stop on the 2010 ASP Women's World Tour will be the Rip Curl Pro Portugal from October 7 through 11, 2010.
