The 37th AMA Supercross/FIM Supercross World Championship season begins in Anaheim this weekend with defending champion James Stewart looking to get off to a winning start.
Stewart, who races for the L & M Team, will be giving the new Yamaha YZ450F its first outing at Angel Stadium, which will hold three of the season’s 17 races.
Arch-rival Chad Reed is likely to once again be the 24-year-old from Florida’s biggest threat after the Australian had to settle for the runner-up spot for the fourth time in his career last year. The likes of Josh Grant and Ryan Villopoto will also be looking to be involved in the title race.
But Stewart will be out to help Yahama seal a trio of AMA/FIM titles and is certainly relishing the challenge. “I look forward to racing with the number-one plate in 2010,” he says.
Stewart recovered from a disappointing start to the 2009 season to win 11 races en route to the title, finishing four points clear of closest challenger Reed. With 36 race victories already to his name, Stewart will be looking to add to his tally and move up from third in the all-time winner’s list.
Stewart will be backed by new teammate and Yamaha mainstay Josh Hill this season, while Josh Grant and Bercy SX winner Justin Brayton will provide further support as members of the Joe Gibbs Racing squad.
