Brian Vickers’ bad luck at his home track continued when a damaged right front put an end to his chances at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina.
Vickers eventually finished in 34th place at the checkered flag behind winner Jimmie Johnson; the driver’s disappointment at his latest victory bid at the track dubbed ‘The Beast of the SouthEast’ was evident.
“We still haven’t won a race there, but we have come very close,” said Vickers, from nearby Thomasville, North Carolina. “It’s pretty frustrating because I like that track and I want to win there pretty bad.”
Johnson, who started on pole and led all three practice sessions for the fifth race in the Chase, moved ahead during a 17-lap run to the finish to beat Matt Kenseth to the finish line by 2.303 seconds.
In winning his sixth race of the year and the 46th of his career, Johnson extended his series lead to 90 points over second-placed Mark Martin, who finished 17th. Kasey Kahne finished third, while Jeff Gordon came fourth to climb to third in the standings, 135 points behind Johnson.
Vickers enters Saturday night’s NASCAR Banking 500 12th in the Chase standings — 351 points behind Johnson, however he is only 45 points behind 11th-placed Kasey Kahne and 128 behind 10th-placed Ryan Newman.
Scott Speed finished six places ahead of Vickers in 28th place at the Lowe's Motor Speedway and sits in 35th place overall in the standings.
