Andre Villa in Mexico Flo Hagena for Red Bull X-Fighters

With torrential downpours washing out the main event, Norway’s Andre Villa claimed victory at the first round of the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour 2010 in Mexico City, thanks to his top qualifying spot.

The 42,000-strong crowd packed into the Plaza de Toros Monumental to see the 12 best FMX riders go head-to-head to kick off the 2010 Tour, and despite the freak weather conditions, they were not disappointed. Pouring rain and lightning forced the cancellation of the event after the first round of the Final, which handed Villa the victory due to his win in qualifying. He is the first Norwegian to win an X-Fighters event.

The 27-year-old – who edged out Nate Adams and Robbie Maddison – was clearly delighted with the win. “I have trained hard my whole life and made sacrifices for this.”

American Adams finished behind the Norwegian in second, and he was full of praise for the victor. “Andre deserved to win here. When it comes to open-air sport, you have to live with the weather conditions.

“The heavy rain meant the landing hill was very slippery. I think the decision to abandon the competition was the right one.”

The next stop for the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour 2010 is Giza, Egypt on May 14.
