Cole Whitt led from start to finish to win the USAC Western Sprint Car 40-lap feature at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on Thanksgiving night. The race was part of the track’s 69th Lucas Oil Turkey Night Grand Prix program; Whitt picked up his second win of the season on pavement.
“I’d like to thank my crew that has helped me all year: Chuck Gurney Jr., Richy Brannan and my dad,” said Cole. “All their hard work and support has paid off. To end the season with a win in the 29w just makes it perfect.”
In the USAC National Midget portion of the event, Cole qualified in the 14th spot, securing a starting position in the 98 lap feature. Cole worked his way up to the 5th position early in the race but was forced to retire with motor issues and finished the race in 17th.
“Keith Kunz and the crew worked hard to get us where we needed to be,” said Cole. “Unfortunately some things you can’t control. I’d like to thank Keith and the crew for all their hard work; we’ve had an up-and-down season in the midget but everyone kept their heads up and worked hard and that’s what it takes - teamwork.”
Cole and the crew will now enjoy some much-needed time off before preparing for the 2010 season ahead.
