Andrew Short at the AMA Pro Motocross Finale at Pala Raceway Matt Pavelek/Red Bull

The 2010 AMA Pro Motocross Championships made its final stop of the series at Pala Raceway in San Diego, California on Saturday, and the enthusiastic SoCal faithful came out in droves to support the newly-added race to the circuit. Underneath beautiful sunny blue skies, Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short wrapped up the series with a strong second-place finish.

With second-place overall in the championship points race still up for grabs, Short rolled into Pala on a mission. As a member of Team USA at the upcoming Red Bull Motocross of Nations, Shorty was looking to end the AMA series on a hot streak.

When the gates dropped to kick off the first moto of the day, Short launched off the pad aboard his Red Bull-backed Honda to nail the holeshot and take the early lead. Andrew held strong out front for the first three laps of the moto, but newly-crowned series champ Ryan Dungey was just too tough, as he snuck by during the fourth rotation.

Looking strong in the second spot for the bulk of the moto, Shorty unfortunately ran into the back of a fallen rider through a tight lefthander on lap 11 and dropped back to third, where he would finish the moto.

In moto two, Shorty narrowly missed the holeshot, railing through turn number one in the second spot. Patiently stalking leader Brett Metcalfe early on, Andrew moved his way into the top spot on lap number five after a mistake by Metty.

Short continued to lead for five more laps, but Dungey was once again too strong to hold off, as he made his way by at the eight-minute mark. Shorty gave it his all to hang with Dungey during the final six laps of the moto, but second place would be his fate as he took the checkers for the final time in the 2010 series. With Metcalfe finishing in the third spot just behind him, Shorty narrowly missed out on taking second-overall honors for the series.

“Brett and I have had a great points battle going at the last few rounds,” Short said after the race. “Of course I would have loved to finish in second, but Brett definitely earned it. Finishing the series strong feels good, though, and I’m really excited to represent Team USA in two weeks!”

When the dust settled and the smoke cleared on the 2010 series, Red Bull athletes finished strong, holding down three of the top five spots. Stay tuned for the Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations in Lakewood, Colorado on September 25-26 for your next motocross fix!
