Following the tragic death of Andy Irons on November 2, 2010, the three-time ASP World Champion’s family have released a statement in which they thank his colleagues, friends and fans for their support.
Andy passed away after travelling home from the Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico to Kauai, Hawaii because of suspected Dengue Fever. In their statement, the Irons family also paid tribute to the ASP medical team as well as Andy's sponsor, Billabong, who put on an “extraordinary memorial” for their son.
“Andy’s passing was met with the most overwhelming and powerful wave of love and support,” Andy’s mother Danielle said. “It’s like one big, giant hug, arms around you, of comfort.”
Andy’s father, Phil, added: “The friendship and concern that has poured in from everywhere has been unimaginable, and we are deeply, deeply grateful. Words are beyond us.”
The family were also thankful for the support they received from Billabong, who organized a memorial fitting for the champion surfer.
"Then they orchestrated such a soulful, loving day for the community and for Andy,” said Danielle. “Andy would have loved it! It was an extraordinary memorial."
The statement also recognizes the community of Hanalei, where Andy grew up, who have rallied around the family.
There will be a second and closing ceremony to celebrate his life during the start of this year’s Pipe Masters. Find out more on the ASP site.
