The 22nd annual Steel City National in Delmont, Pennsylvania hosted round number seven of the 2010 Women’s Motocross Championship series on Saturday afternoon, and Honda Red Bull Racing’s Ashley Fiolek entered the day looking to gain some valuable ground on series points leader Jessica Patterson.
After a strong effort and a moto one win, however, Fiolek finished the day in second overall, and the two championship rivals left Steel City still separated by 22 points. Here’s how the racing action unfolded…
Fiolek got a great jump out of the gate to grab the moto one holeshot just ahead of Patterson. Looking good out front early on, Ashley was able to extend her lead after a small bobble by Patterson at the halfway mark. Keeping her championship hopes alive, Ashley motored on for the wire-to-wire victory.
Rocketing out of the gate on her factory Honda to kick off moto two, Fiolek rounded turn one in the second spot just behind Patterson. Slowly reeling in the series leader, Ashley put a move on Patterson to take over the lead for a brief stint out front.
The duo swapped positions several times throughout the seven-lap moto, but unfortunately a last ditch effort by Fiolek would come up just a bit short of the second moto win.
Ashley’s 1-2 moto scores were good for second overall on the day, and the 2010 WMX championship now goes down to the final event of the series next weekend at Pala Raceway in San Diego, California.
