Bethany Cosentino, singer for Best Coast, the fuzz-drunk surf-pop band from Los Angeles, recently dropped by Red Bull Music Academy Radio for a session of Headphone Headlights to talk about her musical influences -- and there are some unlikely candidates, like Oasis and Whitney Houston.
"Oasis was one of my first favorite bands when I was growing up," she says. "I remember when I first heard 'Wonderwall,' I was obsessed with them. And 'She's Electric' is my favorite Oasis song."
About Whitney Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You," which was written by Dolly Parton, Cosentino says, "I used to do talent shows a lot as a kid and I would always sing this song."
There are a few country songs on the playlist, which Cosentino says she listened to quite a bit specially for Best Coast's latest record, "The Only Place." "The way that country singers use their voices," she explains, "they kind of croon and they have this crescendo in what they do; that's just very beautiful and something I wanted to emulate on the record."
Naturally, several California bands make the list, such as the Eagles, Beach Boys and Fleetwood Mac.
"Inherently we're very California and it's very hard to escape that sound," says Cosentino, who will perform at the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, California, next week. "When you come from a place, you kind of adapt to that sound."
