Buffy, Freddie Kruger, and Machete together to face off against the undead? That’s right, the new “Call of the Dead” level, released Tuesday as part of the Escalation downloadable content for Call of Duty: Black Ops, features an all-star zombie-hunting team of action/horror celebrities.
Danny Trejo, most famous for his role as Machete, wields his iconic dual knives against the undead while Sarah Michelle Gellar makes the transition from vampire to zombie slaying. The other playable characters include Robert “Freddy Kruger” England, who gets a rare role as a good guy and Michael Rooker, who is used to combating zombies in the TV show “The Walking Dead.”
The four of them gang up to fight a new zombie horde in the dark, ice-covered isles of Siberia in Call of the Dead, an homage to the classic movies of zombie flick director George Romero like “Night of the Living Dead” and “Dawn of the Dead.” In fact, Romero also guest stars as himself in the game.
In Call of the Dead’s opening cinematic, Romero and the aforementioned foursome are busy shooting a zombie flick when a real zombie appears on set. Romero tells it to “Get back to hair and makeup, you don’t look dead enough,” and the shambling creature responds by capturing the director and turning him into a zombie. Romero eventually becomes a sort of boss that wields a supercharged studio light that can be used to zap players.
Call of the Dead uses similar gameplay to previous zombie modes in Treyarch’s Call of Duty games -- working as a team to survive many hordes of zombies, trying to find ammunition and power-ups and reviving downed teammates -- with a few twists. There are smarter zombies that can glide down ziplines, weapons that can be modified and new melee weapons like Trejo’s knifes, Gellar’s wooden stake and England’s pitchfork.
Escalation also features four additional multiplayer maps for Black Ops, including:
- “Hotel,” where players battle it out on the roof of a Cuban luxury hotel and casino against the backdrop of old Havana
- “Convoy,” which delivers intense, close-quarters combat at the scene of an ambushed U.S. military convoy
- “Zoo,” which sets gamers on an eerie ride through an abandoned Soviet Russian Zoo
- “Stockpile,” which pits players in a remote Russian farm town, housing secret WMD facilities
