LBJ v Pflugerville Red Bull Media House North America, Inc.

Austin LBJ players celebrated Tuesday’s Red Bull 7-on-7 Game Breakers Austin Qualifier championship by a spewing sideline shower of Red Bull.

LBJ capped a perfect 5-0 title run with a 29-6 victory over Round Rock Stony Point in the title game.

Jaguar quarterback Darius Collins threw a pair of touchdown passes to both Trey Porter and Sebastian Canizares to decide the 13-team event at Round Rock High School.

“We got the idea for spraying Red Bulls to celebrate winning the Red Bull tournament,” said Porter, a 5-10, 190-pound senior. “We felt like we owed ourselves.”

LBJ and Stony Point (5-2) nabbed qualifying berths to the Red Bull National Finals July 15-16 in Dallas.

“Making it to Dallas is a big step for us,” said Collins, back for his second season at quarterback. He started as a sophomore at wide receiver. “We won as a team today. We weren’t close like this last season.”

The Jaguars’ day might have been much different without a double-overtime defeat of Bastrop, 38-30, in their opener.

Porter said he had an idea things were going LBJ’s way when a Stony Point defensive back got a hand on a Collins’ pass. It deflected to Porter standing calmly in the end zone for the second Jaguar touchdown of the championship game.

Canizares split the weary Stony Point defense on a long pass and run for LBJ’s final touchdown.

“We surprised some teams today,” said Canizares, a 6-1, 180-pound junior.

Regular school coaches are prohibited from coaching 7-on-7 in Texas, but most teams have adults serving as coach.

Not LBJ.

“We coach ourselves,” Porter said.

Stony Point quarterback Christian Aherns said he was proud of the way his team rebounded after an opening 32-11 loss to Pflugerville Hendrickson.

“It looked like it was going to be a short day,” said Aherns, a junior. “In the final, we were playing our fourth straight game and LBJ was coming off a long rest. We were a little fatigued.”

Emotionally, Stony Point peaked when Aherns completed a pass in the end zone to Tyler White to defeat Pflugerville on the final play in a semifinal and nail down the final berth to Dallas. There was contact and a flag on the play, but after a few moments of discussion, the official’s arms went up to signify a touchdown.

“The play was not designed to throw to be to him, but I had a feeling because of the work we‘ve done together in the off-season,” Aherns said.

Pflugerville (2-2) finished third and Pflugerville Hendrickson (3-2) placed fourth. Both were eliminated by Stony Point.
