Every young skier’s dream is to learn from the best in the business, and that’s just the opportunity that 13 young female skiers received recently at Utah’s Canyons Resort. Grete Eliassen, freeskier and multi-medalist at Winter X Games, took the up-and-coming skiers “Under her Wing” for an unforgettable ski lesson.
A winter storm blew in the night before, covering the mountain with nine inches of fresh powder, and the snow continued to fall throughout the day. The mounting powder didn’t dampen the young skiers’ spirits however, as they were in inspired by the chance to ski with their idol.
From the moment Grete stepped into the registration room at the Canyons to greet the young skiers, the girls were ready to board the lifts and start down the slopes. Grete truly embraced the Red Bull Under My Wing concept and greeted each skier with her friendly and warm personality.
The youngest ski participant also traveled the furthest. Talented skier Kelly Sildaru, a nine-year-old phenom from Estonia, impressed everyone with her amazing style. She and her dad flew to Park City just for the opportunity to ski with Grete and spend the day on the mountain.
The young skier had an aggressive, no-fear, freeski style and blew everyone away. She quickly had the other young girls - and Grete - cheering her on as she hit every jump. Though she couldn't speak English, she was able to communicate with Grete and the other girls through the camaraderie and love of skiing.
After a full day on the hill, the girls shared dinner with Grete and a private viewing of Grete's movie Say My Name. Each young skier was also awarded with a Red Bull Under My Wing necklace that Grete placed around their necks in an Olympic-style presentation.
The 13 young girls left exhausted but with smiles from ear-to-ear. Many of them felt so close to Grete that they joked they would call her the next week to meet up and go skiing together again. It was truly a one-of-a-kind experience sure to bolster the girls’ passion for the sport.
