jack o lantern smile

Remember the joys of Halloween as an adolescent? Dressing up as your favorite character and going out in the cold darkness with nothing but a few friends and a plastic hollowed-out jack-o-lantern to house your hard-earned loot? Even in its diminutive, bite-size form, a Halloween Kit Kat is so damn scrumptious. It’s as if the act of earning your candy by walking for hours and knocking door-to-door gives depth to the flavor in some unfathomable way. Ah, the sweet nectar of capitalism.

But as good as it was as a youngster, Halloween, like wine, cheese, or Heath Ledger’s career (Ooh… too soon?) gets better with age. Take, for instance, the costumes. Referring back to prepubescent age, boys and girls dressed up in cute, innocent things: Prince Charming and Sleeping Beauty, the big bad wolf and Little Red Riding Hood, Grumpy and Snow White, and so on and so forth.

Now? Well, it’s pretty much the same thing, only the promiscuous factor’s been ratcheted up a ton or two. Have you seen how Sleeping Beauty, Red Riding Hood, and Snow White look like now? It’s like they walked off a set that wrapped filming in the San Fernando Valley. Maturation can be so much fun.

What’s even more fun is celebrating Halloween at a proper party. After combing through listings, here’s our compilation of some of the best, coast-to-coast. If you’re lucky and your costume’s tight, who knows? You just might get a trick and a treat. If not, ask the bartender for Red Bull cocktail specials. Don’t worry, wings will work on all outfits.

Part 1: LAS VEGAS, NV
What better city in the world to celebrate a Pagan holiday than Sin City itself? Okay, maybe hell if you’re really into heat and dark shit, but for the rest of us, Vegas should more than suffice. Not only do they never stop serving (“Last Call” is for suckers), the Las Vegas Strip has more extravagant clubs per square-mile than anywhere else on the planet. It is the party Mecca, and as the saying goes, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. With the exception of certain diseases and your now-haggard costume that belongs in the trash bin.
