Bubba Stewart stepped it up last weekend in St. Louis with not only a first-place win at the AMA Supercross Race, but also with his new hand-painted, custom Nike boots. The new boots were designed by Detroit artist Eon Rodrigo, who was selected by Stewart, his fans, sneaker buffs and artist supporters during Red Bull’s Rubber and Sole competition.
“The story behind my design is to portray James Stewart not only for his achievements, but also where he came from and what he's all about,” explains Rodrigo.
Seven emerging designers threw their shoes in the ring last month in hopes of being selected to create Stewart’s new boot look. Stewart narrowed the selection down to two designs which the public then voted on through a mobile SMS text-voting campaign.
THE DESIGNER’S FOOTPRINT
Rodrigo has been designing since he was 12 years old. For almost ten years, he has taken his inspiration from his environment to new levels, including two years at the Art Institute of Michigan. Rodrigo finds inspiration from those who manage to achieve the dreams they chase, while making an impact in the world through his art.
The outline of the sole encompasses all of Stewart’s championship titles and reads “and beyond”, which represents his future. Swirls on the bottom of the sole represent the twists and turns James endured throughout his lifetime while also symbolizing a Supercross track. Typography on the design includes numbers representing his jersey and also his dedication to wear number 259 for a childhood friend who got injured wearing the number.
RED BULL RUBBER & SOLE
Stewart had been looking for the next design to appear on his Nike boots, so Red Bull Rubber and Sole launched in February in honor of Black History Month to solicit new ideas which showcased design concepts from talented artists hailing from Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis and Indianapolis.
