Joey Bada$$

The kids are all right, but Joey Bada$$ is way beyond. In fact he’s nice as hell and way too young at that. Although he must already be weary of yet another Illmatic comparison, there still is something deeply intriguing about rappers that haven’t finished high school but are already equipped with razor-sharp skills and a musical taste steeped in the legacy of Large Professor, Pete Rock or MF Doom.

The hip-hop prodigy was recently part of the Red Bull Music Academy takeover at the Boiler Room NYC, where he hit the audience with his distinct, Golden Era-influenced beats.

Calling him another throwback rapper, however, would be selling him short, as there’s something distinctively next level about '1999' and 'Rejex,' the two acclaimed mixtapes that earned him fans and stage time worldwide, as well as features with the likes of Mac Miller and Casey Veggies, and a slot in the renowned annual BET cypher.
