Karl Meltzer on the Pony Express Trail Christian Pondella/Red Bull Photofiles

On September 15, 2010, Karl Meltzer set out on a run in Sacramento, California. Not all that uncommon, considering the fact that Meltzer is a professional ultra-marathon runner who regularly puts in 40 to 50 miles at a time, even throwing down the 100-mile day more often than you’d think.

However, that day marked the start of an ambitious project for Karl known as Red Bull Human Express. Meltzer planned to run the 2,064 miles of the Pony Express National Historic Trail to commemorate its 150th anniversary, a feat no one has ever accomplished before.

Consuming 5,000 to 7,000 calories a day and running an average of two complete marathons per day, Meltzer powered through the sometimes difficult-to-find trail, even squeezing in a round of golf to break things up.

See how his adventure unfolded in the Red Bull Human Express program premiering on Universal Sports on Monday, April 18 at 9 p.m. EST. Subsequent airings are on Tuesday, April 19 at 2:30 p.m. EST and Friday, April 22 at 10 p.m. EST.
