Short track speed skater Katherine Reutter, the newest member of the Red Bull family, just wrapped up a stellar event in Sheffield, England, taking a silver medal in the overall competition at the World Short Track Championships.
Reutter, an Olympic silver medalist in the 1,000 meters, started the event with gold in the 1,500 meters, following with bronze in the 1,000 m and silver in the 3,000 m to take second overall behind South Korea’s Cho Ha-Ri.
Reutter’s first-race gold was the first world title for a U.S. woman in 25 years, the last being Bonnie Blair in 1986.
It didn’t come easy. Reutter had planned to stay in the top three for the duration of the race, but found herself sitting in last with five laps to go. With a plan to make her move with two laps remaining, she felt her competitors relax with four to go and went for it.
"I just went as hard as I could on the outside,'' she said, taking the win by .24 seconds.
