On Saturday, August 27th, the 2011 Red Bull King of the Rock German finals took place in the city of Kassel. The event went down in true King of the Rock style -- inside a former penal institution. All 32 finalists slept in prison cells, the court was surrounded by high walls and barbed wire, and some of the 600 spectators watched from cells too. It's not every day you see a slam dunk contest held inside a slammer.

The main event was about deciding Germany's entrant for the world finals on Alcatraz next month. That honor went to Matthias Von Hedebrand of Bonn, who outplayed the competition to win the final game 10-9. Matthias earned an all-expenses-paid trip to The Rock in a few weeks, where we'll find out who will be this year's Red Bull King of the Rock.
