Levi Siver is a top-notch pro windsurfer, known in the industry as one of the greatest wave sailors in the sport. We could tell you that he’s 29 years old, that he was born in Idaho and that he now lives in the beautiful environs of Maui, Hawaii, but that’s just part of his story. We checked in with Levi to get another angle, digging into some of his favorite things. Read on to get a little deeper into what makes Levi - well, Levi.
I have this conversation with my friends all the time. There are a lot of good films, but Braveheart would be my all-time favorite. Never has a film pulled out so many emotions in one story line.
Favorite TV show:
I don't have a TV, but my girlfriend and I Netflix TV shows. We like Dexter; it has a twisted sense of humor but the show has an original insight into the main character that keeps you addicted.
I love to travel, but the best part of traveling is coming home to Hawaii.
I like music mags – like articles on how The Stones came up with a song or what new band is breaking through. I like the creative process behind music and the insight into the minds of great musicians.
Favorite song or artist:
Led Zeppelin, if I had to pick one band. The dynamics of light and hard is mastered by Zeppelin. I think Jimmy Page once said that the four elements of their band members would create a fifth element when they were on point.
Lions have the most amazing faces and dolphins are the most graceful, but I think I've made my greatest connection with a dog. They’re a true friend right to the end.
Blue for me is the most refreshing color. It reminds me of the ocean and it makes me feel relaxed, I guess. Even though people tease me because I always wear black clothes.
I never liked holidays - they just bring more crowds in the surf and on the road. Thanksgiving is nice with the food factor, though, and we always get our biggest swells on Thanksgiving day.
Favorite tech gadget:
The iPhone everyone loves. It's a love/hate relationship. It's handy, but anyone who has AT&T on the North Shore knows that the reception is a joke. They seem to break after a year, but I guess that plays perfect with the one-year contract deal.
Favorite thing to eat:
Mexican all the way to the border. The spices and the flavor… I will eat Mexican food forever. Besides that, a good fish burger at the Paia fish market plays nice.
Favorite thing to wear:
Flip flops, surf shorts and a t-shirt. It's the best factor of living in Hawaii. It's funny when you see kids wearing pants and beanies in 90-degree temperatures.
Favorite place to be:
With family and friends here in Maui. I love to travel, but the best part of traveling is coming home to Hawaii. It makes living here fresh and new again and the feeling you have when the plane lands is magic.
Favorite way to indulge or treat/reward yourself:
BBQ with friends and playing guitar, taking in the afternoon light with some cold ones. Simple pleasures…
Favorite times to get up/go to bed:
I like those days when you clock out of bed fresh at 7:30 and get a jump on the day. They don't always happen, but that's the ideal way at least.
Favorite thing to spend money on:
My girl, I love watching her jump up and down. She's so funny with gifts, forever grateful for the small things. I like that.
Favorite thing to do in your free time:
Watch movies or go camping in Hana.
Favorite time for a Red Bull:
Right before I go out on the water or hit the town! It's a great upper when you need that lift.
Favorite thing about your sport:
The freedom to enjoy nature and do something I love for a living. There's always some new trick or style to work on, it never gets boring. The ocean is different every day, with so much to offer.
Favorite sport other than your own:
I love snowboarding. My biggest inspiration was first Terje Haakonsen in the 1993 Volcom film everyone knows. Then came Mack Dawg with Peter Line and that crew. It was inspiration for miles and drove my ambition to work on the Red Bull windsurfing movies.
Favorite celebrity or sports star:
Daniel Day-Lewis is super impressive to me. He's not a self-consumed Hollywood nut but a great artist in his trade. I like how he disappears for ten years then comes back to win an Oscar. In sports I would say Nicolas Müller, he's butter on a snowboard. I love watching him in the Absinthe films.
Favorite people to surf or hang out with:
Easy-going friends who teach me to just enjoy and live in the moment. I over think things sometimes so it's nice to be around people who love the simple things in life.
Favorite thing in your house or apartment:
The Macbook seems to get the most love. We love checking up on the world on the Internet.
Favorite thing about your life:
The good Lord blessed me to enjoy what I love. I never want to take that for granted.
