Lindsey Vonn went three-for-three at the FIS World Cup event in Lake Louise, Alberta, over the weekend, winning a super G and two Downhill races. She has now won four of the five races she has started this season.
Vonn set a blistering pace on Friday, winning the Downhill race by 1.95 seconds, the largest margin of victory in her career.
“I've always had a good connection here with the snow and the way the mountain runs,” Vonn commented. “I just love racing in Lake Louise."
She continued to dominate on Saturday, winning the weekend’s second Downhill event by 1.68 seconds (the second-largest winning margin of her career). She completed the clean sweep on Sunday, setting the fastest time in the super G race.
Sunday’s win marked Vonn’s 45th FIS World Cup win, and her 11th victory at Lake Louise, dating back to 2004. She is now fourth on the women's all-time World Cup win list behind Annemarie Moser Proell at 62, Vreni Schneider at 55 and Renate Goetschl at 46.
"Last year I didn't have as good of a start, so this year I just wanted to come out strong.”
It was the first clean sweep recorded at Lake Louise since Germany’s Katja Seizinger did it in 1997, and the second three-day sweep of Vonn’s career, the first also being a pair of downhills and a super G in Haus im Ennstal, Austria in January 2010.
Vonn now holds a commanding lead in the World Cup Overall standings, 136 points ahead of Germany’s Viktoria Rebensburg in second.
“To have three wins this weekend is more than I ever could have expected,” said Vonn. “I'm just so thankful to have the support of my teammates and everyone on the World Cup.”
"I come here knowing that I've won in the past and it gives me a lot of confidence,” she continued. “It’s just a great way to start the speed season. I feel that if I start well here then it will carry through the season. Last year I didn't have as good of a start, so this year I just wanted to come out strong.”
The women's alpine tour now moves to Beaver Creek, Colorado for a December 7 super G. It will be the first women's World Cup race to be held in Beaver Creek.
“I'm so excited to go to Beaver Creek,” Vonn said. “It's going to be such an awesome race, to finally be able to race at home, five minutes from where I live and to have the support of my friends and family there. Hopefully I can take this momentum with me to Beaver Creek and finally get a win in my hometown.”
