EA Sports drops "Madden 13" today. In addition to improved commentary (thank you CBS Sports' Jim Nantz and Phil Simms), fresh uniform details and enhanced mechanics, there are some pretty major audio changes, namely this: "Madden 13" features an original orchestrated soundtrack by Colin O'Malley.

This is a huge change.

For the previous nine years, EA Trax had been responsible for populating Madden soundtracks with music by up-and-coming, radio-friendly hard-rock and rap artists. By 2007, the game featured a whopping 37 songs by chart-topping rockers like 30 Seconds To Mars and Taking Back Sunday, the rapper Lupe Fiasco and indie-dance/rock hybrid the Rapture.

This continued until 2010, when, for the next installments, Madden games featured classic songs primarily by established artists like 2Pac, Beastie Boys, Nirvana, Guns N'Roses, Black Sabbath and Lenny Kravitz. Combining the best of both worlds, Madden 2012 featured a mix of both old and new songs.

Will Madden 2014 return with an original orchestrated score? Or will up-and-coming and/or classic rockers and rappers be featured on the soundtrack?

We don't know. What we do know is that, in the past, the ideal Madden song was incredibly high-energy and motivational, and one that you could listen to over and over again while marching toward the Super Bowl. With the exclusion of 2010 and 2011 -- because it just doesn't seem fair to compare Judas Priest and Good Charlotte, does it? -- we present Madden Soundtracks: The 15 Greatest Hits.
