On June 9, 40 of California’s top skateboarders descended upon the shady streets of Midtown Sacramento for the Red Bull Manny Mania qualifier. As the only West Coast qualifier, the competition was stacked, and the mannys were flowing.
Sacramento native Brandon Biebel was on hand to cheer on the competitors and sign some autographs -- as was contest creator Joey Brezinski, who had the tougher task of judging the contest and picking the winner. Some of the highlights of the day included Ray Maldonado’s half cab manny 180 on the kicker box and Miika Adamov’s manny 360 shove-it.
Taking the top scores from the 10 preliminary heats of four skaters, the field was whittled down to 10 competitors, who went head-to-head in a 10-minute semifinal jam session. With a trip to the Red Bull Manny Mania U.S. Finals on the line, the competition really started to heat up.
Clyde Moore stood out in this round, nailing a 360 flip nose manual, as well as a varial heelflip to manual on the left-to-right bank box. The judges were also impressed by Jeremy “Onion” Lognion’s bag of tricks, including a switch 180 manual heelflip out.
With DJ Whores providing the tunes and setting the mood, the five-minute final kicked off with hammers left and right. A battle ensued between Moore and Maldonado, with Clyde landing difficult tricks such as a nose manual to hardflip.
Ultimately, however, Maldonado’s smooth style and deep bag of tricks put him on top, earning him a trip to the Red Bull Manny Mania U.S. Finals to be held at Woodward East later this summer.
