Mark McMorris has been climbing snowboarding’s ladder for a few seasons but carved his name in the history books when he stomped a triple cork backside 1440 in Aspen this winter (see video below). Bouncing from contest to contest and squeezing in park shoots when time permits, it’s been a full and eventful season for the young Canadian, who is currently recovering from an inury.
How’s your wing?
It’s good, I guess. It’s been two weeks since I was injured, and I’ll be out for two more weeks. I got a hairline fracture in my arm in Tahoe, shot for two days on it, then went to Park City and fell on it on the hip jump at the Launch. I went to the doctor and found out that it was fractured. I had been riding on it for four or five days before I found out it was broken. I’ve been taking some time off and strengthening my shoulder in the meantime.
Where do you spend the most time in the winter?
I drift from place to place. I don’t really spend more than one month at a time in one place. My winter is full of filming, contests and lots of traveling.
Who has the perfect park for progression?
Breckenridge’s public park is super fun.
What’s with M&M?
Where’d you hear that from? Gretchen Bleiler is the only one who calls me M&M. Most people call me McLovin’.
Since landing the triple cork, you don’t go by “Trip”?
No. Some people call me that, but it’s not sticking.
What’s the story on the triple cork? I shot on that jump last week, and it was big, but… A triple cork?!
We were shooting in Aspen, and the jump in the bottom of the park at Snowmass was pretty big – about 75 feet. We had the park crew make a few adjustments to it, adding a little pop. The landing was tall, so it made it safe.
Did you go to Aspen looking to get that trick?
I had wanted to try that trick, and that jump just happened to be the spot. We were shooting with TransWorld SnowBoarding and I was feeling it, so I ended up doing a triple cork backside 1440. It was just the right time to do it.
Ever going to invent a trick called the McMorris?
I think it’s lame to name a trick after yourself - but Mike Michalchuk deserves the self-titled trick, because it’s sick, and the name fits.
Any aspirations of becoming a pipe jock? You got moves?
Well, not really. I want to learn to ride pipe better, though. It teaches you edge control and makes you a better all-around rider.
Favorite female snowboarder?
Ellery [Hollingsworth], Gretchen [Bleiler], Jamie [Anderson] and Spencer [O’Brien]. They all rip.
What’s your favorite playlist on your iPod?
Oldies. Classic rock, but also some rap mixed in there.
What’s up in the coming months?
After I’m healed up, I have a few park shoots coming up. This summer, I’m going to spend some time at Camp of Champions, Mt. Hood and I’m heading to New Zealand in August. Next year, I’m looking to get into the backcountry way more. Can’t wait!
