Media Candy has the best in downloadable and streamable sweetness -- every Tuesday.
The smell of autumn in the air always brings us nostalgia, and this week in Media Candy you could argue that we’re taking a quick stroll down memory lane with news from the Blackstar camp and streams of unreleased Nirvana gems. But we’ve also got White Denim embracing auto-tune, My Brightest Diamond getting remixed by Prefuse 73 and Asobi Seksu staying impeccably cute with their latest video.
Mos Def, Talib Kweli Expand Blackstar Tour
After the success of their stint on the Rock the Bells dates across the country, Mos Def and Talib Kweli are staying under the Blackstar banner to hit up the clubs coast-to-coast. To answer the hip-hop heads out there, yes -- this is the closest you’ll get to a new Blackstar album anytime soon.
It’s also probably the last time you’ll see Mos Def perform under his Mos moniker. Starting early next year, he’ll switch to Yaslin (Arabic for “rich”). Time for a top 5 name-change article? We think so. Tour dates and ticket information here.
Stream 3 Previously Unreleased Nirvana Songs
It’s not every morning you wake up to unheard Nirvana tracks. But with the release date of the seminal Seattle band’s super-mega-deluxe 20th anniversary reissue of “Nevermind” set for next Tuesday, it’s not surprising that Seattle-based radio station 107.7 The End is previewing three previously unheard songs, including a demo version of “Breed,” an early “boombox demo” take of “On A Plain” and a sped-up live rendition of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” taken from a Halloween show in ’91 at Seattle’s Paramount Theater. Stream below.
My Brightest Diamond Share Video, Prefuse 73 Remix
My Brightest Diamond’s video for “Be Brave” takes the studio session video vibe into the warm cinematography realm with minimal theatrics and some spastic dance moves. It’s a fitting visual portrayal of the song, which plays out more like MBD mastermind Shara Worden conducting an orchestra. To boot, Prefuse 73 jumps in to remix the track, which will be on MBD’s upcoming “All Things Will Unwind” LP via Asthmatic Kitty on October 18.
White Denim Gives Us “Hot Thought”
Don’t be shocked when you stream “Hot Thought” by White Denim. Over their five full-lengths and handful of EPs, the Austin-based four-piece hasn’t stuck to any set script. Sure, on their latest effort “D,” White Denim blasted us through their vision of late ‘60s/early ‘70s psych-rock like they’d just binged for weeks on your awesome uncle’s vinyl collection.
But with “Hot Thought,” the group is devouring yacht rock and spitting it back at us through auto-tune -- an instrument not associated with your uncle or the era in which he drove a bright yellow AMC Gremlin.
Asobi Seksu Get Cute & Colorful In “Perfectly Crystal”
Our similarly named friends at Daily Candy are sharing Asobi Seksu’s “Perfectly Crystal,” which features some of our favorite things: Technicolor hues, bare shoulders of cute girls, dramatic shots of the group rocking out and more.
If there were ever a soundtrack made for adorable slumber parties with best friends, this would be it. Asobi Seksu are currently trekking across North America; see those dates here.
