Media Candy has the best in downloadable and streamable sweetness -- dive in every Tuesday.
We’re jumping from genre to genre and absorbing it all today at Media Candy. For beginners, we’ve got dancehall dripping in acid via M.I.A.’s album teaser and a new single from label counterpart Blaqstarr. For seconds, we dive into the indie offerings of new tracks from the explosive Gaslight Anthem and the synth-soaked world of Twin Shadow. Meanwhile, Nick Waterhouse helps us put it all in perspective. Just another Tuesday around these parts.
M.I.A. Posts Upcoming Album Teaser
We don’t have a date for “Matangi,” the upcoming album from M.I.A. But we do have nearly two minutes of the surprisingly poppy “Come Walk With Me,” via the album teaser. As SPIN points out, the outrageously awesome dance style featured is most likely Coupé-Décalé -- French in origin with lots of Congolese influence. We’ll keep you posted as details on M.I.A.’s latest album emerge.
Blaqstarr Plans to Conquer Summer With “She Is Love”
For our next artist, we’re not straying too far from the British-born Sri Lankan rapper with attitude. The Baltimore-based Blaqstarr shares space with M.I.A. on her N.E.E.T/Interscope imprint and their stylings play well together on any mixtape. We offer Blaqstarr’s “She Is Love” as evidence, the slick, summery single that should’ve been the b-side to Andre 3000’s “Hey Ya!”
Blaqstarr’s latest album is due sometime this fall. Stream below, or purchase the track for your own purposes via iTunes.
Nick Waterhouse Goes On A Bender With Some Japanese Dudes
LA Weekly dubbed him “the young man who makes old R&B,” and that’s pretty much the gist of it. Amy Winehouse helped welcome in an appreciation for an era of sound that has since awoken the world to the likes of Sharon Jones and the tour de force that is the Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley and now Nick Waterhouse.
The video for his single “Some Place” dropped Tuesday, featuring Waterhouse taking out a bevy of Japanese business men on a rollicking, drunken journey to bar after bar -- and yet another bar. Late night taco eating ensues.
Waterhouse’s debut album “Time’s All Gone” dropped today as well. You can purchase the album, download “Some Place” for free and watch the video above. Want to see this 24-year-old at work? See when’s he swinging through a town near you.
Gaslight Anthem Shares Single From New Album
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Gaslight Anthem lead singer Brian Fallon explained that he wanted to return to the group’s punk rock roots on upcoming album “Handwritten,” due July 24. “This song felt to us like we still had something to say in this long line of rock & roll tradition,” Fallon told the mag about lead single, “45,” which you can stream right now over at Rolling Stone.
