Media Candy has the best in downloadable and streamable sweetness -- every Tuesday.
This week, this somber version of Media Candy is taking a moment to remember a talented artist who left us way too soon. In addition, we’re rolling hip-hop heavy with a dash of rock ‘n’ roll as Das Racist, Ro Spit and Rockie Fresh land themselves in the candy shop with punky upstarts Dangerous!.
DJ Mehdi Passes Away
Shocking news rolled out today when French DJ Cut Killer informed the Twitterverse that DJ Mehdi has passed away at the age of 34. DJ Mehdi, born Mehdi Favéris-Essadi, was a member of the Ed Banger collective along with the likes of former Daft Punk manager and international producer Busy P.
He was also one half of Carte Blanche with fellow French producer Riton. Early reports suggested that Mehdi had fallen from a rooftop during a birthday party. A publicist has since confirmed the news.
Das Racist Goes Uncensored
Last week, rappers with a funny bone Das Racist unveiled their video for “Michael Jackson,” the mega-trippy single from their full-length “Relax” (out today). To celebrate the release of the new album, the Das Racist boys thought it would only be right to share with the world the uncensored director cut’s of this outlandish single. If they didn’t fuck with you the first time, you can always count on Das Racist to catch you on the flipside.
Ro Spit Shares New Single, Searches for Car
On October 25, Detroit rapper Ro Spit will drop his new album, “Glass Ceiling Project.” However, you might not have to wait until late October to hear it. Just a few days ago, his car was stolen along with 20 promo copies of the new disc, which features the likes of Black Milk, Guilty Simpson, Dwele and more. One would imagine they’d find their way to the web.
Until then, Ro Spit has just dropped a track off the album entitled “The City,” a quick-hit flow track with an off-the-wall percussive arrangement. In the face of automotive adversity, Ro Spit continues to impress.
Chicago’s Rockie Fresh Premieres New Video
The world of hip-hop is flooded with true talent and viable voices. Rockie Fresh is one of those young guns coming up with a distinct, emotional connection to his subject matter. Fresh off tour with Fall Out Boy lead singer Patrick Stump (odd pairing there), Fresh has proven that he is willing to blur the line between genres.
In the video for “No Fear,” off of upcoming album “Driving 88,” Fresh unlatches his lid over a raw live drum sample and continues to embrace elements of alternative rock. We anticipate big things from this 20-year-old in the very near future.
Dangerous! Stream Debut Album
Cue up the Vines references! Australia has another rock ‘n’ roll flavor for us to fawn over. Hopefully the boys in Dangerous! won’t fall off the face of the planet like the Vines did. What happened to those dudes and their severe pot smoking habits?
Moving on, Dangerous! drop their debut album, “Teenage Rampage,” in a week on September 20 via Epitaph Records (the ideal landing place for any punk outfit). The title paints a perfect picture of the group’s sound -- angsty, aggressive and uninhibited (with lots of Motorhead influence). You can stream the whole thing via Revolver below.
