Michael Johnson, the highly-decorated sprinter, was a guest aboard an Oracle Team USA catamaran Sunday when he unexpectedly -- and quickly, of course -- abandoned ship.
It happened during the final day of the America's Cup World Series opener for the 2012-'13 season. Snowboarder and sailing enthusiast Travis Rice joined the other Oracle Team boat Thursday and came to grips quickly with the rigging. Not so with Johnson, who plunged after an especially bumpy wave, apparently.
"He may be the fastest man on land," said the NBC announcer. "A bit different on water."
The Oracle team tweeted shortly afterward that Johnson was picked up quickly. When Johnson and Russell Coutts, skipper of the ship, were reunited on dry land, the sprinter joked, “You didn’t come back for me.”
