The New York Red Bulls have bolstered their ranks ahead of the new MLS season by capturing the services of former English Premier League star Teemu Tainio and defender Stephen Keel.
Tainio, the vastly experienced Finnish international with over 50 caps for his country has been signed on a free transfer from Dutch giants Ajax and played almost 100 games in England's top division with Tottenham Hotspur, Birmingham City and Sunderland.
He is best known as a defensive midfielder and will add steel for the Red Bulls in the middle of the park, but his versatility may see him adopt several differing roles within the team.
Keel, a 27-year-old defender, has joined the Red Bulls after a trial spell; he played over fifty games for the Portland Timbers.
Red Bull New York Sporting Director Erik Soler said of the signings: "The club is thrilled about adding a player of Teemu's class. He is a versatile player with a vast amount of experience and we are confident that he will fit right in with the team and become a valuable contributor immediately."
With regard to Keel, Soler said, “We are excited to sign Stephen and have him officially join our club. He has impressed us in training and in our pre-season matches and will provide depth to our back line.”
