Think of it as the world’s coolest science fair, or maybe Iron Chef for hackers. Red Bull Creation asks makers, inventors, and hackers to participate in a 72-hour frenzy of innovation, madness and ingenuity as 12 teams around the country engineer mind-boggling creations centered around a theme.
Like Iron Chef, the chosen teams find out their theme (or idea) at the same time and immediately dive into a non-stop three-day building war. This year, you can watch it all unfold online.
The event starts streaming tonight at 6:00 p.m. PST / 9:00 p.m. EST. There will be cameras inside each team's workshop, broadcasting the progress live. Viewers can comment to the teams and each other during the entire process. High-scoring teams will be invited to participate in the final rounds at World Maker Faire New York in September, which is kind of like Burning Man with a prize.
Last year’s theme was “energy in motion,” and the Minneapolis team 1.21 Jigawatts came out on top with their creation “Paper Trail,” a human-hamster wheel pulling a spray-paint printer alongside it. People could text message a word to the contraption, which would then print it out on a piece of paper.
Who knows what this year’s top-secret theme will be? Tune in and find out -- it’s gonna happen fast.
