Last night the Road to Art Basel continued with the Red Bull Curates event at Villain’s “The Space at Fifty North Third” in Brooklyn, New York. Thirty of the city’s most innovative up-and-coming street artists unveiled the signature styles they brought to their canvas-wrapped Red Bull coolers and vied for the three coveted spots that would take them to the SCOPE Miami show in December.

The Los Angeles and Chicago Curates competitions each awarded three local artists a slot at the Miami show, but in New York there was a tie. Gerardo Cid, CLAW MONEY, COSBE and L’Amour Supreme are all hitting the road to represent New York City at SCOPE.

The work was judged by a combination of audience votes and judges Ron English, the acclaimed artist; the arts writer and cultural critic Carlo McCormick and Daria Brit Shapiro.

What does multi-media artist COSBE think about taking art off the streets and into a world as high-end and organized as Art Basel week? “I've been in this street art, graffiti thing since 1993 and I was lucky enough to get some of the spillover from early innovators of this art form,” he says. “Now that it's becoming respected as a worldwide art form I'm really excited to be a part of it. It truly changed my life.”

Another winner, CLAW MONEY, aka Claudia Gold (pictured above), said the inspiration for her cooler was “ENERGY.” She wanted her signature claws to “be moving molecules surrounded by effervescent bubbles.” She used a combo of spray paint, silkscreen, acrylic, and fabric paint to get the look.

She’s been to Art Basel before, usually to support her friends who are showing. “This year,” she says, “I’m ready and I’m going to bring the ruckus to Florida!”

Like COSBE, she thinks street art is “one of the biggest art movements in history and it deserves its shine.” When the NYC artists join up with the crews from L.A. and Chicago in December, they’ll get their chance.
