Best known for legendary rappers like Scarface and Bun B, the city of Houston received a special hip-hop treat last night in the form of Red Bull Emsee, a rhyming battle that promises to deliver “verses in the blink of an eye.”
This invitation-only MC event was designed to find the best freestyle rappers in the country through an eight-city tour that includes Los Angeles, Philly, Detroit, Houston and Atlanta.

Bun B hosted the Houston stop, which featured eight of Texas’ freshest freestyle rap. The crowd of 800 at Warehouse Live was entertained with a night full of fierce competition, but in the end, Austin native, Phranchyze, took home the title for the second year in a row after a surprise tiebreaking final round against runner-up Hoodstatr Chantz.
“Usually, there is a clear cut winner, but in this case, everyone wanted and needed that extra round,” Bun B said. “Not only the judges couldn’t choose a winner but the crowd couldn’t either.”
Phranchyze will advance to Atlanta in November where he will face off against the country’s best freestyle MCs for the national title in front of a panel of industry heavyweights. The overall Red Bull EmSee champ will earn a trip to Los Angeles to record at the Red Bull Studio with a headlining producer or their choice. The next Red Bull EmSee battle will be hosted in Boston on October 17.
“It feels good!” Phranchyze said. “That was my most intense battle in a long time.”
Judges included hip-hop producer and MC, Alchemist, hip-hop sensation, Trae Tha Truth and Houston’s own Chopped and Screwed Pioneer, E.S.G. The talented DJ Baby Jae kept the beats bumpin’ throughout the show.
