D Meitz celebrates victory with host Bun B Kareem Black/Red Bull Media House North America, Inc.

Eight of DC’s freshest freestyle MCs headed to the new Fillmore in Silver Spring, MD to battle it out at Red Bull EmSee, but only one walked away the champion.

In a night filled with piercing punch lines and lyrical acrobatics, it was D’Meitz quick wit and lyrical flow that earned him the champion title after an intense series of heated battles. He’ll advance to the Red Bull EmSee national finals in Atlanta later this fall.

Last night’s battle, hosted by rapper Bun B, was judged by a panel of hip-hop heavies including Big K.R.I.T., Joe Budden and Devin the Dude who performed for the crowd as well.

D’Meitz from Ohio to DC

Winner D’Meitz explained his experience, “It feels incredible to win. I don’t win a lot in my life. I’m going to keep trying to chase this high.” He continued, “I’m going to go to Atlanta and hold it down for Maryland, DC, Virginia, Ohio – where I’m from and the Armed Forces everywhere.” D’Meitz was able to impress all of the judges with his enthusiastic freestyle skills – Joe Budden noted that he “was the one who brought it in the end.”

D’Meitz is no ordinary Marine. He started battling in Cleveland, Ohio during High School during half-time at basketball games. He got involved in Ground Zero, church-sponsored league for those under 18 years old, and quickly moved into Spit Boxing, hosted by Suave Goddi, where he earned some local recognition.

The necessity to freestyle in Cleveland, tested him through a gauntlet of activites including rhyming over non-hip hop instrumentals, such as opera and hair metal; quickly freestyling with props being taken out of a chest; and the ever-popular one-on-one competitions. “While deployed in Iraq, I spent a large amount of time honing my freestyling to stay entertained, to keep my mind sharp, and help bond with my fellow Marines,” D’Meitz says.

If D’Meitz indeed wins the national finals in Atlanta, he will be heading into Red Bull Studios in Santa Monica to work with a producer of his choice from a select panel. But first, he’ll have to go up against some of the best freestyle MCs from around the country. The next Red Bull EmSee battle will be hosted in Detroit on October 28, 2011.
