It seems like just yesterday that Seattle DJ Four Color Zack ripped up the Red Bull Thre3Style World Finals stage in Chicago to win the coveted DJ competition, but three months later, the long, loud and worldwide search for the ultimate party DJ is back and bigger than ever.
Red Bull Thre3Style is a one of a kind global competition. It's not a scratching contest. It pits DJs against each other in a battle of 15-minute sets. DJs must mix together a minimum of three different genres of music while keeping the party rocking. The DJs are judged on track selection, creativity, mixing skills, stage presence and crowd reaction.
"When that light turns on and it's your turn, all that friendship goes out the window." -- DJ Jazzy Jeff
This year, 160 DJs will compete in 26 U.S. qualifiers. The winners will move on to five regional finals with the top DJs battling it out at the National Finals in Los Angeles in April. There, the finalists will be scrutinized by a celebrity panel of judges: DJ A-Trak, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Z-Trip. The winner of the National Finals will represent the U.S. in the World FInals in November.
"I almost want to equate it to the NBA All-Star game," said DJ Jazzy Jeff at last year's World Finals. "Everyone is being friendly. All the DJs are bouncing ideas off one another. But when that light turns on and it's your turn, all that friendship goes out the window."
