There has been a slight shake-up in the rock charts. The Foo Fighters debuted at the top of the Billboard Rock Songs Chart with “Rope,” dethroning Cage The Elephant’s “Shake Me Down.”
Cage The Elephant, however, remains on top of the Alternative Songs Chart, and Mumford & Sons still top the Rock, Folk and Alternative Album Chart with their latest studio offering Sigh No More.
Music at the Academy Awards
For a rock musician, the only thing better than winning a Golden Globe is winning an Oscar and Trent Reznor accomplished that feat.
A month removed from winning the Golden Globe for Best Original Score, the front man of Nine Inch Nails and his collaborator Atticus Ross won the Academy Award for Original Score for The Social Network.
After getting the Oscar, a stunned Reznor said in his acceptance speech, “Wow. Is this really happening? When we finished work on the Social Network, we were very proud of our work and happy to just be involved in this film, and to be standing up here in this company is humbling and flattering beyond words.”
Reznor and Ross are slated to score the Hollywood adaptation of the The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo due out in theatres for the 2011 holiday season. Perhaps the pair will win big again next year as well. Congratulations guys on a job well done!
Arcade Fire Drama
There’s always someone calling shenanigans at awards shows and now, the Grammys are under fire. Longtime music industry executive Steve Stoute dropped a reported $40,000 on a full-page ad in the New York Times to berate the Recording Academy for losing touch with contemporary pop culture.
Among many of his other accusations were Arcade Fire’s two-song performance to close out the show, feeling as if it were a plot helped designed for the Canadian rockers to win the Album Of The Year award for The Suburbs.
Well, the group’s manager Scott Rodger has fired back with words of his own. In a letter to Bob Lefsetz, the manager explained, “Arcade Fire had the final slot on the Grammys as the ratings were low at the end of the broadcast. It really is that simple. We were one of the least known acts on the bill for a network audience. Don’t you think I wanted a better slot for the band? The reason we got a second song was also simple. No big plot. We had no guarantee of air time, but it was simply to play out the end credits of the show, if we’ve even had that much.”
We’re not picking sides, but you have to wonder if Stoute would’ve created this much controversy had he saved the 40 G and wrote a blog on Tumblr. Imagine what could have been.
